Glenda Richards

Glenda Richards was born in Ceduna on the West Coast of South Australia in 1957. She worked all her life and gained many qualifications in the areas of administration, horticulture and communication. When having to look after her father for many years, she also became a qualified carer. Glenda explains: “As a career, your heart needs to be in the right place because it is all about connecting with people.” Working as a carer she was too busy to paint, but she started to first draw Indigenous symbols, and then she focussed on painting themes such as the Seven Sisters. Through the help of mentor Pam Diment, Glenda started to experiment with the layering and application of colours by using dot painting as well as brush stroke techniques to create depth in her paintings, which are usually acrylic on canvas. Glenda demonstrates an extraordinary sense of colour application in her paintings, and she believes that “all colors compliment each other, it only depends on how you apply them”. Her style has advanced to the use of more contemporary interpretations of cultural elements. Having displayed her unique works in several art prizes and group exhibitions, such as the Port Lincoln Art Prize, Malka Art Prize, Tarnanthi, and Red Poles exhibitions, Glenda believes “painting is about inner strength and emotional connections we can create with others through our paintings.”
